The dissertation asks and answers a twofold question: (1) What is the nature of meanings and, (2) What role do meanings play in the development of personality? The following answer is defended: meanings are mental acts that mediate the interaction between the world and subjects and that can generate predictable behaviors. The psychological condition known as hysteria is used as a case study, and psychosomatic conditions in general are likewise considered.
