Capability development and organizational crisis: Unintended consequences of exploration in biotechnology startups.
- 140 p.

Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Wisconsin - Madison, 2006.
Organizational strategy scholars have increasingly agreed that organizational capabilities are a key factor in explaining inter-firm performance differences. These scholars have therefore placed emphasis on the questions of how the firm capabilities emerge and evolve over time. Questions still remain about what are the consequences of experience that may influence firm capabilities. In this thesis, by integrating insights from two strands of the literatures---organizational learning theory and firm capabilities---I test the idea of unintended consequences of exploration efforts. While exploration is instrumental to the development of innovative capabilities, it also increases the odds of organizational crisis. The central theme of this thesis is that while biotechnology startups can develop innovative capabilities through exploration, it is a double-edged sword. The same exploration that helps build capabilities will also jeopardize the young organizations. Empirical results of panel regressions and event history analyses show that firm level partnerships and scientist intensity in terms of percentage of employees holding advanced degrees can moderate the relationships.
