Thesis (M.S.)--University of Nevada, Reno, 2006.
Since western U.S. settlement in about 1860 and the beginning of active fire suppression in the 1930s, singleleaf pinyon (Pinus monophylla [Torn. & Frem.]) and Utah juniper (Juniperus osteosperma [Torr.]Little) have been expanding into sagebrush communities. With increased tree fuel loads in pinyon juniper zones, high severity fires are more likely to occur. I used state and transition models to examine the recovery potential of these ecosystems. Due to the highly competitive nature of the trees, understory vegetation (shrubs, forbs, and grasses) is gradually eliminated as stand infilling progresses. Removal of tree overstory in areas of relatively low to intermediate tree cover could create suitable conditions for increases in understory plant diversity and herbaceous biomass. This study examined the recovery of understory vegetation following spring prescribed fire over an elevation gradient for high, intermediate, and low tree covers in central Nevada. Overall aerial cover and biomass for herbaceous vegetation increased over the elevation gradient for intermediate tree cover plots but decreased as tree cover increased on plots at the intermediate elevation.
