This thesis describes research focusing on an intervention which, when given prior to an educational program, may help physicians identify their learning needs and therefore increase their interest in the subject matter and motivate them to attend the educational program. Specifically, in this thesis theories of behaviour change, motivation, and CME are explored in light of the hypothesis that a motivational questionnaire may stimulate the physician's interest to attend a program.

This study was conducted with a convenient sample of 214 family physicians from Canada who were attending educational weekend seminars sponsored by a pharmaceutical company during the spring and fall of 2001. Participants were asked to participate in a study by completing a seven question (four-page) questionnaire titled "The Motivational Questionnaire" consisting of seven questions pertaining to the educational content of the program in question.

Before and after completing the motivational questionnaire, the participants ranked their interest in attending the educational program using a Likert scale from 1 to 10. Data collected indicates that 79% of the physicians were more interested in attending the educational program following the motivational questionnaire with 43% circling 10, (the highest interest choice); 14% did not circle a choice. The results show that the participants were more interested in attending the described educational program after completing the motivational questionnaire than before completing the motivational questionnaire.

This study brings forward some valuable insights into where change begins and presents an intervention which stimulates learning and change. This information can be used immediately to make significant changes in how CME programs are presented to the physician learners to help attract them to programs. More work is needed to identify the required interventions throughout the remaining stages of change to ensure continued motivation.
