The purpose of this study was to identify factors that influence the health-promotion level of female English-speaking Caribbean immigrants. There are many factors that can influence health promotion behaviors. The determination of the most influential factors can aid in the development of appropriate health promotion interventions. A descriptive cross-sectional design was used to determine the impact of (a) ethnicity, (b) marital status, (c) country of origin, (d) level of education, (e) years since immigration, (f) yearly income, (g) placement of health locus of control, and (h) self-efficacy on the health-promotion level of English-speaking Caribbean immigrants.

Data were obtained from a sample of women (N = 206) ages 18 and above from the countries of Guyana, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago. Participants were given a self-administered questionnaire packet consisting of four surveys that totaled 80 questions. Analysis of data included (a) descriptive statistics, (b) ANOVA, (c) multiple regression, and (d) Pearson coefficients.

Recommendations are for larger and broader cross-sectional studies of Caribbean immigrants. Research that addresses predictors of specific aspects of health-promotion behaviors, such as nutrition, exercise, and social support, would be beneficial. It is also recommended that health-promotion interventions be targeted to Caribbean females who have recently immigrated to the United States.
