It has been recognized that medical education does not adequately prepare future physicians to understand how culture influences patients' perceptions of health and health care and how perceptions effect treatment. Although some cross-cultural education initiatives in medical school date back to the 1970's, requiring cultural competency education in the medical schools is mostly still in its infancy. The purpose of this study was to examine how medical schools are reforming to meet new mandates that state they must make changes to reflect the growing understanding that culture is critical component to providing medical care.
