David, Susannah E.
De/constructions of romance and the body in women's magazines: Implications for gender.
- 149 p.
Adviser: Anthony Stigliano.
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Alliant International University, San Francisco Bay, 2005.
This dissertation reviews historical perspectives and other studies of women's magazines, and then provides a theoretical analysis of representations or constructions of the body and romance in the text and photography of five contemporary women's magazines: Self, Ladies Home Journal, Cosmopolitan, Jane, and Glamour. Several theoretical concepts are used to interpret constructions of the body and romance in women's magazines. These concepts include but are not limited to, 'public transcript' 'discourse of truth', and the 'projected reader'. The author then de-constructs the body and romance in women's magazines from a post-structuralist semiotic perspective. The analysis reveals how magazines work to construct the body and romance in such a way that reinforces traditional binary conceptualizations of gender.
