Thesis (Ph.D.)--Columbia University, 2007.
The sense of community among the nuns of the thirteenth-century Benedictine/Cistercian convent of Helfta in Germany is an exceptionally rich resource for an investigation of the spiritual significance of community in the later Middle Ages, a period whose piety scholars have long characterized as individualistic. I focus on Spiritual Exercises, by Gertrude of Helfta (d. c. 1301/02), and two books of revelations and teachings collaboratively composed by the nuns at the convent, the Book of Special Grace, associated with Mechtild of Hackeborn (d. c. 1299), and the Herald of Divine Love, associated with Gertrude.Subjects--Topical Terms:

In chapter one, I situate Helfta in its broad social and institutional orbit. In chapter two, I consider scholarship that has informed recent studies on the authorship and audience of Special Grace and the Herald. I review these studies; and I discuss the audience for whom Special Grace, the Herald, and the Spiritual Exercises were intended. In chapter three, I examine the collaborative process of the composition of the Herald and Special Grace. In chapter four, I analyze the religious significance to the nuns of their communal literary endeavors. I also consider what this literature may have taught the women of this convent about the potential spiritual benefits the common life offered. In chapter five, I examine the nuns' sense of community within the context of their liturgical piety.
