Philosophical hermeneutics and the nightmare of history.
Patterson, Richard G.
Philosophical hermeneutics and the nightmare of history.
- 209 p.
Adviser: Donald F. Lewis.
Thesis (M.A.)--California State University, Dominguez Hills, 2006.
Philosophical hermeneutics involves the recognition that human understanding is inherently historical. The dream of absolute knowledge based on eternal truths has seduced philosophy since its beginnings, but the last century has seen the development of a completely new form of philosophy based on an understanding of the way in which experience involves language and language contains the past. Hans-Georg Gadamer and Paul Ricoeur are the principle representatives of philosophical hermeneutics. This paper traces the roots of their philosophy in Wilhelm Dilthey, Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger. It illuminates their perspective on history and language by means of a comparison to the thought of Owen Barfield, and concludes with an exploration of the moral implications of philosophical hermeneutics.Subjects--Topical Terms:
