The role of beer in Karimojong society.

Thesis (M.A.)--University of Kansas, 2006.
This thesis examines nutritional profiles of agropastoral families in Bokora and Mazeniko territorial sections of Karamoja, in northeastern Uganda, from September to December of 2004, and changes in social and nutritional uses of beer. Differences in access to sorghum, casual labor opportunities, and cattle are reflected in nutritional profiles. Women in Bokora had access to sorghum; beer sales provided currency to purchase foodstuffs to supplement the diet. Women in Mazeniko lacked sorghum, and were more dependent on working for commercial brewers to provide beer and dregs for daily subsistence. Beer and dregs thus accounted for a greater percentage of energy and nutrient intake in Mazeniko than in Bokora. Changes in social uses of beer are also observed with commercialization, particularly its use in rituals, labor relations, and the maintenance of elder power. These differing uses of beer reflect social and environmental changes that influence the adaptive strategies of the Karimojong.
