Thesis (M.S.)--University of Southern California, 2006.
This research study investigates the role of the local spectral parameter, formant frequency peaks, and the role of the global spectral parameter, overall spectral tilt on identification of vowels by cochlear implant users. Spectral tilt is defined as the slope of a line joining the amplitude peak of formant frequencies F1 and F3. A matrix of 49 acoustic vowel stimuli was created using a custom program in MATLAB. Within this matrix, seven values of F2 frequencies were fully crossed with seven value of the spectral tilt. These 49 stimuli were presented to the listeners in isolated manner as well as in presence of the context sentence. Data suggests that CI users rely more on overall spectral tilt regardless of the context sentence.
