Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Minnesota, 2005.
When confronted with injustice in society, what theoretical and practical resources are available to those seeking its redress? Acts of protest like civil disobedience serve well in many circumstances, but become increasingly difficult to apply and justify in situations where division run deep, and injustices are grave. My dissertation extends John Rawls' model of civil disobedience to address situations, using Mohandas K. Gandhi's technique of satyagraha (truth or soul force) as a framework for doing so with regard to social movements. The result is a model of civil political protest or action that retains a broad appeal, range of application, while playing a constructive role within Rawlsian theory toward the establishment of more-just societies. Through this discussion, nonviolence emerges as a key criterion for justification.

To apply and test the theoretical frameworks mentioned above, and to answer the question of whether they may provide a resource for marginalized peoples in a diverse society, I adopt the case study of indigenous struggles in Southern Mexico, focusing on the Zapatista uprising of 1994.
