Upper lip, lower lip and jaw movements in children as they acquired the voicing contrast for /p/ and /b/, were studied longitudinally and compared to adult speakers. A movement tracking system obtained lip and jaw kinematics as subjects produced the target utterances /papa/ and /baba/. Laryngeal adjustments were tracked simultaneously through acoustically recorded voice onset time (VOT) of the consonants. Articulator movements were measured during oral opening for the first vowel and during oral closing for the second consonant of each utterance. Lip and jaw displacement, peak velocity and duration were analyzed over this developmental period. Spatial and temporal coupling of articulator movements were also examined.

Across this period of developmental phonological change, the lips and jaw played different roles during oral opening and closing. Jaw movement was the largest contributor to movement into oral opening as displacement and velocity increased with contrast acquisition. Conversely, movements into oral closing were accompanied by increases in upper and lower lip peak velocity. These findings support the contention oral opening and closing have different task requirements and that children modify their articulatory movements to meet the demands of each task.

Spatial aspects of movement changed more than temporal features. Spatial coupling between the jaw and upper lip significantly changed across sessions. Before contrast acquisition, the jaw and upper lip moved in the same direction. These articulators began moving in opposite directions after children acquired the voicing contrast, illustrating that the upper lip began to actively participate in production of the utterance. This finding suggests that children use flexibility they have in the spatial domain to modify articulatory movements. Lip and jaw movements became less variable as the voicing contrast was acquired. These changes were most prominent in the jaw. The decrease in movement variability across sessions, during the production of /papa/ but not /baba/ suggests that fewer movement options are available as children begin to produce the voiceless phoneme. Overall, results support the hypothesis that children's articulatory movements become more coordinated and less variable as the voicing contrast is acquired.
