Arnold Schoenberg's Four Songs for Voice and Piano, Op. 2, one of his first sets of published songs, contains three songs in which the young composer sets the texts of the lyrical poet Richard Dehmel. Erwartung, Schenk mir deinen goldenen Kamm (Jesus bettelt), and Erhebung incorporate the German Symbolist poetry of Dehmel's controversial volume Weib und Welt. The document addresses several essential questions regarding the poet and his poetry and examines Schoenberg's compositional choices in setting these three Dehmel poems.Subjects--Topical Terms:
