The purpose of the study was to explore the learning experiences of Protestant women clergy and examine how these learning experiences inform their professional practices and understand how such learning enable them meet the demands of both their spiritual and secular lives. This qualitative multi-ease study involved eight Protestant women clergy selected through purposeful sampling. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews. The major theoretical underpinning for this study was constructivism and situated cognition.

Three interrelated themes interconnecting the stories were identified during the analysis; (1) Challenges in reconciling secular and spiritual lives; (2) Challenges in retaining a woman's voice in parish ministry; (3) Challenges in seeking self renewal. These themes broadly represented the dominant issues that enabled, participants to engage in integrated learning activities.

The findings show that learning experienced by women clergy occurred through personal relationships. They interacted and connected with friends, constructing meaning on a personal level creating self awareness and also helping them retain their voices in parish ministry. This learning was multifaceted and consistent with the literature on women's ways of knowing, reflective practice and constructivism.

These ministers also belonged to multiple learning groups or learning communities where learning always occurred. Learning communities were either located in groups of other non clergy women for example, society for orchids, or in professional groups for example, clergy groups. These ministers engaged in dual contextual learning experiences or "gaining distance." It is the idea of temporal withdrawal from details of life to get the larger picture. For instance, women engaged in gardening while simultaneously coming to understand gardening and God's purpose and greatness.

Some women engaged in learning activities, including silence that helped integrate their secular and spiritual lives. Learning for women clergy was not only mediated through rational thinking but, they also experienced God in unique ways, gaining insights and self renewal for ministry. Limited transfer of ministers learning from earlier secular lives to church responsibilities occurred.
