Unlike the distinct pathways that lead to elementary or high school level teaching, three divergent pathways exist for the preparation of middle school teachers. Some learn to teach through generalist elementary programs, some learn to teach through subject-specific secondary programs, while still other middle school teachers learn to teach through specialized middle level preparation programs. Though each of these pathways represents very different assumptions about the kinds of knowledge that middle school teachers require, we know little about what teachers learn depending upon the pathway through which they are prepared.

Using a qualitative, case study design, this research provides an in-depth analysis of the strengths and limitations of the two most common preparation routes---the elementary and secondary pathways---for preparing middle school social studies teachers. The case study follows one cohort of prospective teachers in each of the two pathways as they progress through a semester of university and field experience that focuses on social studies teaching and learning. Through observations of classroom practice, surveys, interviews, and document analysis, the research characterizes the contributions of each program to the teachers' learning and also highlights important limitations of these two pathways for preparing middle level social studies teachers.
