Pharmaceutical care is a new professional practice requiring a new educational curriculum with which to prepare its practitioners. The creation of a curriculum that will be accepted worldwide by educators who wish to train pharmaceutical care practitioners, will require knowing which elements of this curriculum, if any, are culturally bound.

The purpose of this ethnographic study was to discover and describe the manner in which pharmaceutical care is taught at the Universidad de Concepcion in Chile, and to understand the adaptation that has taken place due to cultural aspects unique to this country The sample used for this study consisted of 21 subjects including professors and students from the Universidad de Concepcion. Data were collected through participant observation, interviews, focus groups and document analyses, and analyzed using a grounded theory approach.

This study found that in spite of profound differences between pharmacy education in Chile and the United States, the focus of education remains the drug product and not patients. It was also found that pharmaceutical care is conceptualized very differently in Chile compared to the United States, and this has direct influence in how it is taught. A very passive attitude towards health is found to be characteristic of Chilean patients. The cost of drug therapy was found to be one of the main cultural factors determining patients' choices regarding their pharmacotherapy. Scarce resources were also identified as a characteristic of the Chilean health care system, which needs to be taken into account when establishing pharmaceutical care practices.

It can be concluded, that the local cultural context is quite different from that seen in the United States, especially regarding the health care system and patient's health care beliefs and behaviors. In spite of these differences, the practice of pharmaceutical care as described by its original developers, does not need to be changed in its basic principles and essence and can be readily practiced in the setting studied. Nevertheless, some adaptation will be required regarding how this practice is taught to Chilean practitioners and pharmacy students.
