A pilot acid mine drainage treatment system was constructed at the Leviathan sulfur mine in Alpine County, California. The system was designed to treat only a fraction (0.5 gpm) of the acid mine drainage discharging from an underdrain (French Drain) collection system.

The treatment system consisted of sequenced chemical pretreatment and biological treatment. The chemical pretreatment consisted of an Anoxic Limestone Drain (ALD) to remove aluminum and raise the pH, and a series of three oxidation ponds (OXPONDS) for the precipitation and removal of arsenic and a portion of the iron. The final stage biological treatment was an anaerobic cell (ANCELL) filled with horse manure substrate that employed sulfate reducing bacteria to remove remaining contaminants and nickel as sulfide precipitates. Additionally, the ANCELL generated alkalinity that neutralized influent acidity and elevated effluent pH.

The purpose of this study was to document the treatment of the devised system in neutralizing the acidic mine discharge and the contemporaneous removal of sulfate, aluminum, arsenic, iron, and nickel; and evaluate the operating performance to determine whether an expanded treatment system of this type was feasible for the entire underdrain flow.

Throughout the year long study, the treatment has consistently reduced aluminum, arsenic, and nickel concentrations to less than Drinking Water Standards (DWS). Iron removal, also initially highly efficient, declined with the onset of low winter temperatures and has not recovered. The removal of sulfate has been minor.

The major operational difficulty has resulted from iron oxide precipitation within the system plumbing, which made flow to the system erratic and necessitated two modifications of the As-Built system. Initial concerns over potential freezing of the system during winter operation did not materialize. Although a thick ice capping did form on the anaerobic cell surface, subsurface flow continued throughout the winter.
