Except for Viet Rock, which defies translation due to its extreme reliance on American slang and on song, I have translated all the influential Open Theatre's plays. Each translation is accompanied with a detailed introduction.

In discussing the plays, I have diversified my approaches, emphasizing varied angles so that the sum total of introductory articles serves as a critical study of the development of the Open Theatre's work per se.

The Open Theatre was formed in 1963 to research and develop non-Method acting approaches for the purpose of expanding the acting abilities of its members. Eventually, however, it became both a producing and creating company. Through its three overlapping activities, the Open Theatre established itself as one of the most influential forces on contemporary theatre on both the national and international levels.

Despite its importance, the Open Theatre is unfortunately little known in the Arab world. As the Open Theatre covered various modes of non-naturalistic theatre and developed for it numerous acting and playmaking devices, its accomplishments could contribute considerably to the development of Arabic theatre in North Africa and the Middle East.

Chapter II is dedicated to the Arabic theatre. It is not a comprehensive study; rather, it deals only with the modern attempts to experiment with native theatrical forms. Because indigenous forms originated in the medieval Arabic period, Chapter II begins with a study of the historical evolution of these forms in and after that period.
