Both stress and rate were found to have significant effects on duration. The greater degree of stress, the longer the syllable is, and the faster the rate, the shorter the syllable. A formula is proposed to calculate durations based on moras.

This dissertation investigates the phonetic properties of Thai syllables and tones in primary-, secondary-, and unstressed positions at fast, normal, and slow rates of speech, and explores implications of the results for phonological theory and for speech synthesis.

Ten speakers of Thai read sentences containing target syllables in the initial position of phrases, compounds, and disyllabic words (total of 1860 tokens). Durations of vowel and final consonant were measured, as well as pitch (F0) values at eleven points space throughout the syllable rhyme. F0 values were normalized, and six properties were computed: average F0 height, highest F0 value, lowest F0 value, excursion size, highest F0 location, and lowest F0 location.

Speaking rate did not produce any significant main effects on any of the pitch measures, indicating that rate does not effect the realization of tone. Stress did have a significant effect on tone realization: primary-stressed syllables were found to have a larger tonal excursion size than others. In bimoraic syllables, the five-way tonal contrast is maintained regardless of change in stress or rate. A combination of acoustic properties can be used to distinguish among the five tones. In monomoraic syllables, a two-way distinction between high and non-high tones was found.

The present results contribute to both phonological theory and speech synthesis. Thai is argued to have three levels of stress, distinguished by duration and tonal properties. The phonetic results also support moraic representations of syllables and tones (Moren and Zsiga 2006). In addition, a /H/ vs. /empty/ opposition is proposed for tones in monomoraic syllables. For speech synthesis, an economical rule system is created to generate appropriate durational and F0 values for the specified stress condition and selected speed.
