All literature communicates its own structure---its beginning, middle, and end. Moreover, it does so linguistically with what discourse analysts call boundary markers. Boundary markers are linguistic cues that signal the structural borders both within a discourse and at its outer limits. In other words, they signal to an audience the formal arrangement of a conversation, a story, or a poem. In the Psalter, boundary markers include obvious markers like acrostics; inclusios, or envelope structures; discourse phraseology like blessings and praise; structural variation from a pattern; and even deictic pronouns like "this" or "these," which can have a summarizing or evaluative effect. Moreover, boundary markers tend to cluster at the most important structural points in a psalm---namely, its beginning and end. Hence, closure in the Psalter is often characterized by a build-up of markers. The greater the build-up, the more obvious the terminal boundary.

Though poetic markers are similar to editorial ones, they are distinct in important ways. More to the point, editorial closure is an outgrowth of poetic closure; editors recycled specific poetic markers organize psalm collections, making them more standardized and predictable in the process. Furthermore, closure is an exegetical tool in its own right, and its application is most obvious with regard to the secondary endings editors appended to certain psalms. Along with other philological and redaction-critical evidence, closure helps identify the boundary between an original ending and a secondary one.

Finally, discourse analytic notions of poetic structure and closure are tied to the concepts of coherence (thematic unity) and cohesion (the concrete means of signaling that unity). In fact, closure is an aspect of coherence because boundary markers are specific cohesive devices that help shape an audience's perception of how well literature hangs together. In all, boundary markers provide a plausible way to describe and measure closure and coherence in a biblical book.
