Thesis (Dr.)--Universidad de Valladolid (Spain), 2003.
A contrastive study of Kiswahili and Spanish, two different languages both genetically and morphologically, and at the same time identical since they are both human languages. The study develops gradually, touching on themes related to language and communication, general linguistics, pragmatics and discourse analysis, to mention a few, as a preparation for the central theme, which is the analysis of three speech acts, namely plea, command and desire, and the structures used by the two languages to express them.

Structured in eleven chapters, the study presents and examines: the components of language, emphasizing that language finds its full expression in use; the classification of the world's languages, with a special interest in Kiswahili, Spanish and Arabic; the Bantu language family and its characteristics, stressing that despite the high percentage of arabic loans, and the fact that for centuries Kiswahili has been written in arabic script, it is indeed structurally a Bantu language; the history of Kiswahili and its at least sixteen dialects with their respective characteristics; Kiswahili phonology and morphophonemics; the morphological processes that intervene in the formation of words in both Kiswahili and Spanish. A section presents part of the lexicon shared by Kiswahili and Spanish due to the arabic influence experienced by the two speech communities, and a brief study shows how the two languages have adapted the loan words to their respective morphological systems; the Kiswahili noun and verb system; the speech act theory and the analysis of utterances in Kiswahili regarding the expression of plea, command and desire.

The following are some of the conclusions: though a speech act may be unsuccessful, there is no reason to claim by the same token, a communication failure: successful communication is governed by mutual understanding between speaker and hearer; the mood does not define a speech act: the imperative mood, apart from expressing commands and orders also expresses pleas and desires, while the subjunctive mood, usually associated with the expression of desire or plea serves also to transmit prohibitions, which are negative commands; though a language universal, politeness is nevertheless manifested and evaluated differently in each speech community.
