The impetus for this study comes first from the recent practice of applying contemporary linguistic concepts in the area of pragmatics to dead Classical languages in an effort to reconstruct how their speakers used a given element; and second, from the recent characterizations of the Hittite enclitic clause connector -ma 'but, and' as a marker of either topical, or focal, or background information, all three of which have very different statuses in linguistic discourse.

The contexts in which -ma occurred were analyzed in the three linguistic periods of Old Hittite, Middle Hittite, and Neo-Hittite to provide the data necessary to draw conclusions about -ma's function synchronically in each period, as well as to furnish data for a diachronic analysis of -ma's function from Old Hittite to Neo-Hittite. -ma was found to occur in contexts associated with topical information: subject switch; with focal information: contrast, counterexpectation, pair- and series-marking, referent-introduction, and emphasis, as seen in non-standard word order and with orthotonic personal pronouns; and finally, in contexts associated with background information: expressions of orientation, including conditional protases, and paragraph-beginnings. From Old Hittite to Neo-Hittite there is a radical increase in the frequency of -ma , especially in these contexts: series-marking, paragraph-beginnings, counterexpectation, and with orthotonic personal pronouns. In all three linguistic periods, -ma occurred most frequently with subject switch (topic), contrast (focus), and orientation (background), so it seems that researchers offering new descriptions of -ma's function were giving priority to only part of its distribution. I hope to have shown that, although -ma is associated to varying degrees with all of these pragmatic categories, it nevertheless does not consistently mark any one of them, and is probably best described as an adversative clause connector, a characterization similar to those given for the particle in standard reference works, but which can now be proposed with certainty.
