Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Texas at Austin, 1999.
This dissertation is an conversation analytical study on the sequential organization of politeness in native-nonnative speakers' interaction. The Persian politeness phenomenon of taarof was identified and analyzed in telephone conversation openings and offers. Taarof is a system of stylized and ritualized linguistic patterns which is used to indicate lower-status for oneself while elevating the status of the person being addressed (Beeman, 1986). The analysis of pragmatic interference in the interaction between Iranian speakers of German and German native speakers demonstrates how taarof is transferred into lranians' interactional behavior when speaking German. The analysis suggests that some features of taarof influence not only the linguistic system of Iranians speaking German, but also the preference organization of their interaction with Germans. The results may be summarized in terms of four issues: (1) the contrastive study of telephone conversation openings in Iran and Germany indicates that Germans frequently perform only one or no exchange of the ritual "how are you" sequence, whereas Iranians perform several "how are you" sequences. By claiming interest and concern about their co-participants, Iranians elevate the politeness level of their interaction. (2) The analysis of the pragmatic interference reveals that the rituals in opening encounters on the telephone are transferred in the Iranian speakers' speech when conversing with Germans; this transfer may impede the telephone conversation opening and/or may be understood by the German speakers as topical inquiries. (3) The analysis of the sequential organization of offers in Iran and Germany demonstrated that in both cultures the preferred response to offer is acceptance, and the dispreferred response is rejection, but that Iranians frequently initially reject the offer before accepting it. An immediate acceptance of an offer in Persian may be perceived by the Iranian speakers as "impolite". By initially rejecting the offer, Iranian recipients of an offer seek to raise the politeness level of their interaction. (4) Iranian speakers of German and German native speakers may consciously orient to the knowledge of taarof and address the existence of the cultural difference. The cultural difference in the way which offers are accepted may lead to miscommunication in the interaction between Iranians and Germans.
