Although learners often refer to characters in ways unlike those of native speakers, even Novice level learners do not violate the anaphoric hierarchy, providing evidence of its universality.

This dissertation analyzes the acquisition of null and overt pronouns and noun phrases (NPs) by second language (L2) classroom learners of Spanish of various proficiency levels. The study departs from previous research in that the analysis is from a discourse rather than a syntactic perspective. While other researchers have collected data within a discourse context , few have analyzed null and overt references for the functions they serve within the context. In this study, data are collected within a narrative context and references to the characters are analyzed according to their role in creating narrative cohesion.

Unlike previous research that has focused primarily on null and overt pronouns, this dissertation analyzes the entire spectrum of references including null pronouns, overt pronouns, proper nouns, definite NPs, and indefinite NPs. These linguistic forms constitute an anaphoric hierarchy from which the speaker chooses based on the level of specificity required. The analysis, furthermore, includes references in both subject and non-subject position.

The data reveal some significant findings. Unlike previous syntactic analyses that have shown an early acquisition of null subjects, our data indicate that overt references are overused well beyond the beginning stages. The data also suggest, however, that transfer from English does not play a major role in L2 acquisition until the later stages. Rather than overusing overt pronouns, as would be predicted by a transfer hypothesis, learners in the Novice to Intermediate Mid levels overuse overt NPs. It is not until the Intermediate High level that an overuse of overt pronouns is evident. Furthermore, Novice level learners do not make the necessary distinctions between definite and indefinite NPs, even though they are used in similar ways in English and Spanish.

The data highlight the importance of a discourse analysis. It is argued that this framework provides a more thorough understanding of the L2 acquisition of null and overt references than do syntactic studies that have been conducted primarily within the framework of Universal Grammar.
