The term "null-prep" refers to a phenomenon in second language acquisition in which learners accept interrogatives and relative clauses with omitted obligatory prepositions. This phenomenon is of interest because there is no documented evidence that a similar phenomenon occurs in adult natural languages. This in turn leads us to question whether null-prep is a structure permitted by Universal Grammar. If so, does it arise due to misset parameters? If not, is it a result of problem-solving?

All prior studies of null-prep have focused on learners of English as a second language. Furthermore, it has been suggested that null-prep in ESL may be influenced by the nature of the target language which contains a structure superficially similar to null-prep, bare-NPs.

The present study investigates the null-prep phenomenon among adult learners of French. Using a grammaticality judgement and correction task which controlled for subcategorization knowledge, I determined that null-prep is exhibited by learners of French, in particular with the prepositions a, de, avec and pour, though to a lesser extent than by learners of English. Lexical influences on null-prep are examined, including the nature of the selected prepositions, and it is suggested that the salience of prepositions may play a role in null-prep in French. Correlations are also explored between null-prep and learner characteristics such as proficiency, number of other languages learned, and mother tongue. The former two show negative correlations to null-prep, the latter shows no influence.

Because null-prep is a potentially wide-spread acquisition phenomenon, reasons for its appearance in SLA data, as well as for the difference in null-prep results between French and English learners, are explored. It is argued that both problem-solving and misset parameters are conceivably valid explanations for null-prep, although the more theoretically appealing of the two will be the parameters account especially if child data attest to a null-prep stage in L1 acquisition. Finally, some revisions to the proposed null-prep parameters are suggested based on the new data from learners of French.
