Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of California, Santa Cruz, 1995.
The claim of conceptual metaphor that figurative proverbs of the form, Look before you leap, are understood by making use of abstract conceptual domains that are structured in terms of more concrete conceptual domains was investigated. Specifically, the hypothesis that an understanding of a source domain to which a proverb refers automatically activates knowledge of the target domain to which a proverb contextually applies was tested. A category accessibility paradigm involving personality traits was used, with the initial exposure to target personality traits being through the interpretation of proverbs. The results of three experiments using this paradigm are reported which demonstrate that the particular source to target domain mappings espoused by conceptual metaphor underlie the comprehension of proverbs. These results do not support an opposing view that an abstract, nonlinguistic, nonimagistic conceptual base or a simple direct association between proverbs and their figurative meanings underlie the comprehension of proverbs. A reading inferences paradigm was used to test the view that proverbs are first interpreted literally before undergoing a more figurative interpretation. The results of these experiments demonstrate that a literal interpretation account cannot explain the comprehension of figurative proverbs. Overall, the results are taken to indicate that conceptual metaphor provides the best explanation for figurative proverb comprehension.Subjects--Topical Terms:
