This work is intended to provide an in-depth look at the phonology of Middle Mandarin as reflected in Korean sources of the mid-15th and early 16th centuries. These include the Hongmu chong'un yokhun (1455), the Sasong t'onghae (1517), the Ponyok No Goltae (c.a. 1510), the Ponyok Pak t'ongsa (c.a. 1510) and the No Pak chimnam (c.a. 1510).Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a This dissertation first gives a phonetic interpretation to Korean transcriptions in the materials and then phonemicizes them. Chapter Four includes extensive syllabic tables with thousands of Chinese characters, which can be used as a reference source.
520 $a Chapter Five is an attempt to derive Modern Mandarin forms from those of Middle Mandarin. In order to check intermediate stages, the author quotes Korean transcriptions of the No Goltae onhae (1670), the Pak t'ongsa onhae (1677), the Pak t'ongsa sinsok onhae (1765) and the Chunggan No Goltae onhae (1795).
520 $a After establishing the phonological systems of Middle Mandarin reflected in Korean sources and making an attempt to derive Modern Mandarin from them, it is suggested that a comparative study of these with Chinese sources of the contemporary periods will certainly make a contribution to understanding of Mandarin history and of the formation of Modern Mandarin.
