Few events have transformed the face of the globe as decisively as Islamic and European expansion. This dissertation seeks to explore how perceptions of alterity influenced the treatment Muslim and Spanish imperial powers accorded subjugated peoples. The more an imperial power identified with its subjects, the more amelioritive the imperial impositions. The less an imperial power identified with its subjects, the more severe the imperial policies imposed.

The sources utilized include official documentation such as treaty agreements and legislation, primary historical accounts, personal journals and correspondence, and the Qur'an. The sources provide a window for viewing the language, perceptions, and paradigms at work in the dialogues between hegemons and subjects.

The terminology employed by dominant powers says as much about its user as it does about its object. In the comparative framework attempted here, the terminology serves as the basis for an assessment of the Islamic and Spanish empires. Given the historical link between the two of the Muslim occupation of Spain, the terminology also reflects the influences Muslim practises had on later Spanish policies.
