In 1965 Giles, Ogan, and Steinberg reported that the linguistically defined Austronesian $\{
$a
N$\}$ and Non-Austronesian $\{
$n
AN$\}$ peoples of Melanesia could be distinguished by differences in the frequencies of certain gamma-immunoglobulin markers $\{
$g
m$\}$. Now recognized as the "Gm-hypothesis", the discovery that the distributions of the Gm polymorphisms vary with the language taxa is an important yet controversial exception to the heterogeneity observed in other genetic polymorphism. Although many investigators have recognized that selection of the Gm polymorphisms would explain the features of the distribution which are inconsistent with a genetically-based division of the language taxa, no one has been able to demonstrate that natural selection affects the Gm distribution within Melanesia or elsewhere. However, anthropological and epidemiological analyses of the Gm system focus on the Gm haplotypes (the tightly linked clusters of loci coding the Gm polymorphisms). This study argues that the current convention of analyzing the Gm polymorphisms only in reference to their relationship to the haplotype is inappropriate for and insensitive to detecting selection. The Gm distribution is examined using data compiled from all published Gm typings of Melanesian populations. Cluster analysis essentially re-affirms the existence of the Gm haplotype-based differences between AN- and NAN-speaking peoples first observed by Giles, Ogan and Steinberg. However, in addition, analysis of the Gm polymorphisms revealed the frequencies of the alleles of a single Gm locus (G3m) are strongly correlated with malaria as malarial endemicity varies with altitude. The most plausible explanation for the correlation is selection by malaria. The immunological disorder hyperreactive malarious splenomegaly $\{
$h
MS$\}$ is hypothesized as the mechanism eliminating G3m$\sp{\rm g}$ alleles. The demonstration that the Melanesian Gm distribution may be usefully characterized by the variability of the Gm alleles as well as the Gm haplotypes suggests that similar features will be recognized in distributions of other Gm haplotypes and other gene clusters.
