This study was performed as a partial requirement for earning a Doctor of Education degree from Seattle Pacific University. The psychometric properties of the Witcher-Travers Survey of Educational Beliefs (1999) were investigated. The results of statistical tests using a sample of 1230 survey respondents are included. The initial reliability testing revealed a low Cronbach alpha (alpha = .67) for the entire instrument indicating a lack of internal consistency amongst the 40 test items. The Standard Error of Measurement (SEM) for the total score value was found to be +2.96 (which is well above the 95% confidence limits of -1.96 to +1.96). A 3 factor model (to test the author's three a priori constructs) was analyzed using the Maximum Likelihood method and produced a weak structure with factor loadings ranging from .3 to .57. The scree plot and Kaiser eigenvalue criterion suggested that multiple factors should be rotated (up to 12 latent dimensions were indicated) to produce a better "fit" for the factor analyses. Cronbach alpha levels for the three derived factors were as follows: Factor One "Transmissive" (alpha = .69), Factor Two "Eclectic" (alpha = .17), and Factor Three "Progressive" (alpha = .62). Furthermore, the Cronbach alpha statistic for the instrument when using only extracted Factors One and Three was also low (alpha = .59). These factor analysis findings confirmed the initial reliability results and indicated a discriminatory weakness regarding the author's three a priori constructs. Suggestions for specific revisions to statistically strengthen this instrument for future use are also included.
