Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Washington, 2005.
The relationships between test dimensionality, score reliability, and ability estimation were examined. Because the appropriateness of the reliability and ability estimation are directly influenced by the test structure, it is important to confirm test dimensionality prior to the estimation procedures. Methods of examining dimensionality were first reviewed and discussed, followed by investigations of the effect of test dimensionality on reliability and ability estimates. Multidimensional measures or violation of the tau-equivalent/uncorrelated error assumptions may affect reliability coefficient alpha in both positive and negative ways. Ability estimates need to be generated and reported based on the construct of the test. Depending on the scaling method used to generate ability estimates, reliability estimates should also be carefully chosen to provide meaningful interpretation. The inter-relationships between dimensionality, reliability, and ability were demonstrated with the analyses of the 10 th grade Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) in mathematics.
