Thesis (Ph.D.)--New York University, 2005.
This quantitative study introduces the Leadership Evaluation Battery (LEB), a fifteen-scale instrument designed to measure constructs of Positive Youth Development. "Leadership" beliefs and behaviors are a unique area of exploration, with "Leadership" defined in the context of achievement and commitment to academics. Constructs included dimensions of domains such as the helping relationship, youth development, and violence prevention. A sample of high school students (N = 1942) completed the battery and provided evidence for reliability and validity of the LEB. The instrument was shown to have strong psychometrics. The factor structure and internal consistency demonstrated reliability, construct validity, and convergent and divergent validity. Leadership beliefs and behaviors correlated with each other and with academic performance and social emotional constructs. With some minor modifications, the LEB can measure program effectiveness in the context of positive development and youth resiliency. This is especially relevant considering the academic aspirations of the No Child Left Behind Act.
