Most studies and published materials have examined teacher education curriculum in limited content in a single field or area. Little awareness has been invested in the study of the comprehensive music education curriculum. This dissertation addresses this curricular need by means of constructing a textbook titled Nurturing Musicianship. The textbook suggests an instructional paradigm that provides an innovative approach to music concept development and instrumental performance. The model of administrative and instrumental rehearsal techniques presents a curriculum standard for music education and performance in our schools, colleges and universities.

The dissertation further provides the music educator with a critical view of the quotients of intelligence and emotion as they pertain to teaching, as well as a view of the contemporary roles and responsibilities of a teacher. The curriculum design is intended for the audience of undergraduate music education majors and practicing band directors. In addition, teacher and student activity guides contain practical training exercises to complement the curriculum study.

The dissertation includes an educational merger of theoretical, psychological, and emotional perspectives from past and current research, in addition to containing original material by the author. Chapter titles include: Curriculum, History of Wind Bands, Rehearsal Techniques, Student Motivation, Program Organization and Administrative Leadership. Rehearsal techniques were further examined within the following concept areas: tone quality, balance, blend, pitch/intonation, pulse, rhythm, technique, style, articulation, and musicianship. Within the areas of program organization and administration, the study explores: assessment and evaluation, rehearsal planning, repertoire selection, concert programming, auditioning, instrumental seating, instrumentation planning, recruiting and retention, equipment and facility planning, budgeting, program funding, support personnel, advocacy and public relations, festivals and workshops, organization and time management, practicing, music copyright laws, and classroom management and discipline.
