Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of South Carolina, 2006.
Clinicians and researchers have begun to place increased emphasis on studying not only the weaknesses in individuals, but also the strengths that foster healthy development. Hope, associated with the Children's Hope scale (Snyder et al., 1997), is one such construct that has begun to receive attention as a potential indicator of positive well-being. The majority of past research involving hope (Snyder et al., 1997; Valle, Huebner, & Suldo, 2004) has demonstrated its relationship to important variables such as social support, behavior problems, and personality characteristics. Research assessing this construct in children and adolescents, however, is still very much in its infancy. The current two year longitudinal study builds upon the foundation of past research, but also moves the literature forward by more critically examining the construct of hope as a potential psychological strength in adolescents. Reported findings demonstrate hope's trait like qualities and its predictive capabilities of important emotional and behavioral outcomes. Specifically, the data collected from 704 middle and high school students in the current study provides evidence of hope's value as a construct across three critical criteria: (1) hope's stability in adolescents over a two year period, (2) the utility of the construct in predicting global life satisfaction and internalizing behavior problems, and (3) hope's capability as a protective factor or moderating variable when interacting with perceived stressful life events.
