Thesis (M.A.)--San Jose State University, 2006.
The role of the speech-language pathologist (SLP) has expanded to include working in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) addressing feeding and swallowing issues of premature infants. An eight item questionnaire was distributed to NICU nurses to determine prevailing opinions concerning speech-language pathologists working in the NICU setting. One hundred and forty NICU nurses from 15 Northern California hospitals volunteered to participate by completing the questionnaire. The results revealed that the majority of the NICU nurses were unfamiliar with the role of the SLP in the NICU setting and most had not had opportunities to collaborate concerning feeding and swallowing of premature infants. The majority of NICU nurses were supportive of sharing responsibilities for patient care, and allowing the SLP to counsel parents and coordinate follow-up care for premature infants after discharge from the NICU provided the SLP received specialized training.
