Dichotic listening (DL) procedures are commonly employed in the evaluation of auditory processing in children. Review of the various clinical tests reveals considerable diversity in both the signals employed and their mode of administration. The extent to which other non auditory-specific factors influence the test outcome is often difficult to determine. In a recent study, Martin et al. (in press) suggested that some of the behaviorally-observed DL deficits in children may arise from difficulties in the allocation of attentional resources. In the present study, 24 children were evaluated on behavioral and electrophysiological DL tasks involving selective (directed) attention. Two groups of children were evaluated. One group was comprised of children who showed deficits on behavioral measures of DL (i.e., dichotic-deficit group, DD group); the other group showed no such deficits and served as age-matched controls. For the ERP DL task, listeners were asked to selectively attend to one side for the occurrence of words from a familiar semantic category (i.e., target words). Target words were also presented to the unattended channel (i.e., distracters) in order to examine the degree to which unattended, irrelevant information was processed. Results showed group differences in the N4 and late positive components (LPC) of the event-related potential waveform. The DD group evidenced larger N4 mean amplitudes and longer N4 and LPC peak latencies. In contrast to the substantial differences in interaural asymmetry observed between the groups on behavioral measures, ERP waveforms showed overall little asymmetry to left-sided and right-sided stimuli. Results are discussed in relation to an inability of some children to inhibit processing of unattended auditory information.
