The caring for the professional voice involves an understanding of the aspects of vocal function and aspects affecting vocal function. Individuals who use the spoken voice as an occupational instrument are susceptible to voice problems. Their vocal use occurs frequently, and at times may be strenuous. Judgments about their work may be linked to their vocal performance, which often needs to be excellent. The significance of the voice is especially obvious for those whose careers rely on speech. Clinical advice and support programs to improve voice conditions for professional voice users should be based on a foundation of empirical research. The purpose of this study was to increase scientific knowledge of the effects of hydration on vocal performance. A sample of students ranging between 18 and 35 years of age, and not presenting a history of voice disorder was used in this study. This investigation had two dependent variables, jitter and shimmer scores, indicators of variability in voice production measured by the VisiPitch acoustic analysis. The independent variable was hydration. There were two levels of the independent variable: the dehydration condition, in which the participants avoided ingestion of liquids for 14 hours and food for 12 hours, and the rehydration condition, when the participants ingested 1 liter of water after the pre-test. Two repeated measures designs were applied to the study, allowing the investigation of the hydration effects on voice of participants using two parameters of perturbation in vocal fold vibration as dependent variables, jitter and shimmer scores, across the two levels of the intervention. For the first analysis the dependent variable was jitter scores, and for the second analysis the dependent variable was shimmer scores. The independent variable was the hydration condition in the two tests. Inferential and descriptive statistical techniques were used in data analysis. Statistically significant results support the claim that hydration has a positive impact on voice. The findings could have utility for identifying adequate systemic hydration levels as a prevention approach to avoid vocational difficulties related to voice disorders.
