Thesis (M.Ad.Ed.)--St. Francis Xavier University (Canada), 2006.
This thesis examines the significant learning experiences of women who participated in a women's health activist group and 9 years later, their perceptions of the long-term impact of their experience in the group. The focus of the study was a women's health activist group that existed in a mid-sized Ontario city during the early 1990s. Using a feminist research process, five members of the group participated in unstructured in-depth interviews between April and July 2005. The intention of the interviews was to find out to what extent the participatory activities and experiences of this small group of women engaged in an activist project proved to be transformative and long-lasting. The findings include: conditions within the group that fostered a transformative learning environment; evidence that confirmed that transformative learning had indeed occurred; and proof that transformative learning had an ongoing impact upon the group members. These findings suggest that there is benefit in conducting further research into women's learning in activist groups. Another finding is that facilitators should reflect upon their role within the process of creating conditions for transformative learning within such groups. One of these reflections should be the ongoing impact of these experiences upon the learners.
