This study explored the benefits, problems, and effectiveness of educational delivery methods utilized in the AAS nursing program at the University of Alaska Anchorage. The study was designed to measure last semester students' and graduates' perceptions of the benefits, problems, and effectiveness of the delivery methods used in their nursing education. There were 85 participants in the study, including traditional on-campus nursing students/graduates, as well as those from Outreach sites (where courses were delivered through distance-delivery methods).

Methodology of the study included the use of a survey instrument with participants to obtain both quantitative and qualitative data, plus comparison of student achievement data to further examine program effectiveness. The survey obtained demographic data, as well as participant perceptions about the benefits, problems, and effectiveness of educational delivery methods, through the use of Likert scale items and narrative statements. Statistical analysis indicated the survey instrument used in the study demonstrated adequate reliability (Cronbach's alpha > .65).

Analysis of data included descriptive and comparative statistics on student perceptions and achievement data, between participants from the Outreach and the traditional on-campus delivered program. There were no statistically significant differences between on-campus and distance-delivery participants' mean responses on two of the three total variable scales created for the study ( benefits and effectiveness). However, relative to problems of delivery methods the Outreach participants evidenced statistically significant lower ratings (p = .00), indicating that they perceived there were more problems associated with delivery methods than did the on-campus participants. Qualitative narrative responses corroborated the quantitative findings, with Outreach participants reporting greater numbers, as well as different problems, when compared to the on-campus participants.

There were no significant differences found between the Outreach and on-campus participants' scores for any of the eight student achievement assessments examined (p > .05). This supports what has been reported by many other studies, and leads to the conclusion that there was 'no significant difference' in terms of effectiveness (as evidenced through student achievement data and participants' perceptions of effectiveness) between the distance-delivered and the traditional on-campus delivered AAS nursing program.
