The use of frequency relays for removal of certain predetermined load to recover the frequency from the emergency system conditions has been widely adopted by the electric utilities. This thesis describes the design of a versatile Intel 80196 microcontroller based intelligent frequency relay for the power system protection. An intelligent frequency setting adjustment algorithm is proposed in determining the time and the amount of load to be dropped. A least square curve fitting with sliding window method is employed in estimating the rate of change of frequency. Bad data identification and rejection algorithm is included to reduce the effect of noise. Also, three types of test functions are provided for regular maintenance.
