Introduction. Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) occurs when the muscle must generate unaccustomed eccentric force. Minimal research has been devoted to the recovery of concentric power after this muscle damage. Purpose. To examine soreness levels and concentric torque and power recovery in the shoulder internal rotators after an eccentric bout. Methods. 38 participants were allocated to either a treatment or control group. The treatment group performed 50 maximal eccentric muscle actions. Maximum torque and angular power were measured at six different angular velocities (60, 120, 180, 210, 240, 300 degrees per second) two days before, immediately after, and 1, 3, 5, 7, 10 days after the eccentric bout. The control group completed all tests excluding the eccentric muscle actions. Both groups indicated soreness on a 20cm visual analog scale. Results. There were main effects for day and speed for mean torque (mT), peak torque (pT), mean average power (mAP), and peak average power (pAP). There was a significant difference in soreness between the groups (F = 12.899, p < 0.001). In the experimental group, there was a significant (p < 0.007) negative correlation (-.500) between power and soreness at all six speeds. Conclusion. Different speeds showed different patterns of recovery for all variables. Soreness peaked three days post eccentric insult. Power and soreness exhibited a high negative correlation. Athletes should take caution after performing eccentric muscle action that produces soreness because it may be an indirect marker of power reduction.
