The purpose of this study was to compare the time required to sprint a distance of 20 meters using both traditional starting blocks and the Moye starting system. Twenty-four male track and field athletes from the United States Air Force Academy, the University of Colorado, and the University of Northern Colorado served as subjects for the study.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Each subject was randomly assigned to use either the Moye starting system or traditional starting blocks first. Four trials were performed from each block. The best performance for each block type was selected for each subject. Each trial was measured by an automatic timing system which was activated when the sprinter's hand moved from the touchpad and stopped when the athlete broke the beam of the photo-electric cell located 20 meters from the starting line. Ten meter performance times were generated from film analysis.

At a distance of 10 meters, 15 (62.50%) of the subjects recorded faster performances using the Moye system while one (4.17%) subject recorded a faster time using the traditional starting blocks. Eight (33.33%) subjects saw no change. At a distance of 20 meters, 17 (70.83%) of the subjects recorded faster performances with the Moye system while six (25.00%) subjects recorded faster times using the traditional starting block. One (4.17%) subject recorded identical performances.

Using analysis of variance (ANOVA), it was concluded that starting block type had no effect on either 10 or 20 meter performance time and that no difference in corresponding velocity values existed for athletes using the Moye system. It was also concluded that using the Moye system resulted in a longer initial stride and that those athletes whose primary event group was sprints and/or hurdles produced better 10 and 20 meter performance times.

Three subjects that showed improvement, no change and decreased results with the Moye system were selected and digitized to compare the mechanical differences with each block. It was determined that a higher and more consistent center of gravity path resulted when using the Moye system allowing the athlete to become upright sooner.
