Shortly before December 18th, 1604, the King's Servants, Shakespeare's company, rehearsed and performed in public The Tragedy of Gowrie, a new play they had commissioned, a historical tragedy, related in genre to the company's popular plays about English history and their recent Hamlet play. Prominent members of the government objected to its further performance during the upcoming Christmas entertainments at court because the play was based on a recent incident between the King James and the Earl of Gowrie, and it involved the impersonation of the king by an actor in the company.

The events of August 5th, 1600, always referred to by James as a treasonous conspiracy, "Gowrie's Conspiracy," resulted in a yearly commemoration with compulsory thanksgiving sermons that James transplanted into England in 1603, and in the production of several printed works of narrative, royal praise, and religious thanksgiving. They also resulted in a legal and diplomatic paper trail that shed light on contemporary reactions to the royally sanctioned narrative that the players must have used as a source. This dissertation will survey the various perspectives around the events of August 5 th, 1600 and will offer hypotheses as to the circumstances in which the King's Servants decided to present The Tragedy of Gowrie before the court for the 1604--1605 holiday season, as well as to their most likely source material. Such contextualization of the Chamberlain reference is fundamental in recovering this important "lost" play to literary history.

This dissertation purports to treat the evidence behind the Gowrie play and its contexts with the same rigor and care devoted to other plays of the early modern period that happened to be printed at the time. The re-situation of Gowrie within the circumstances of creation, production, and suppression enhances our picture of the early years of King James's reign, of the theatrical career of the King's Servants, and of the development of Shakespeare's work. It also sheds light on the problems in trying to write history from the point of view of the producers and preservers of printed documents.
