Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Hawai'i at Manoa, 2006.
This dissertation is a study of the degree to which husbands and fathers of Meiji Japan were archetypical patriarchs. It focuses on the families of men who were of high-ranking samurai descent. There are two main objectives: to provide an examination of Book Four in the Meiji Civil Code, which provided the legal parameters within which families acted; and to examine the lives of two men, Shiga Naoharu and Hara Takashi, as case studies.

The Introduction in Chapter One reviews the historiography of the subject and the sources used in the research. It also states the basic objectives and methods of the study. Chapter Two examines the Civil Code, focusing on The Rights and Duties of the Head and Members of the House, Marriage, Divorce, and The Rights and Duties of Parents and Children. This chapter finds that ample evidence exists in the provisions of the Code to question the degree to which it was a patriarchal document. Moreover, it shows that based on an examination of select government data the Code may have had only a marginal impact on society.

Chapters Three and Four present case studies of Shiga and Hara, respectively. Both chapters trace the evolution of their behavior as husbands, fathers, and house heads. They examine a selection of key events in their lives in order first to determine the degree to which the Civil Code may have had an impact on the two families, and second, to understand who these two men were with regard to matters beyond the purview of the Code. These chapters propose that both men were not unlike many other late-Meiji patriarchs, consumed with work and often absent from home. Yet, neither man was an archetypical patriarch, who lorded over the house, arbitrarily exercising his power.

This dissertation suggests that while scholars have demonstrated that the late Meiji period represents a time great change in the domestic life of the masses, little may have changed with regard to intra-familial relations in the houses of men of high-ranking samurai descent.
