The purpose of the present investigation was to compare traditional and alternative assessment of "giftedness" in predicting academic success of minority elementary school children. Educational data of 87 elementary students who were assessed for giftedness using a teacher created assessment system was analyzed to compare the traditional and alternative assessment of "giftedness" in predicting academic success. It was hypothesized that students accepted into the gifted program would not differ on measures of academic achievement based on their method of eligibility for the gifted program. When grouped by eligibility method, the students were found to differ in the area of mathematics but not in the areas of reading and language. The ethnic diversity, as well as the number of students admitted to the program, increased when student eligibility decisions were determined by the use of the alternative assessment. Weaknesses of the alternative assessment were discovered during this investigation and recommendations for improving the alternative assessment are provided.
