Anecdotal evidence suggests that the pastor's wife often offers spiritual, social, and psychological support to help distraught individuals within the congregation. Previous research on this topic appears to be absent from the literature. This study sought to discover the level and type of involvement of ministers' wives in the areas of pastoral care and counseling. A jury-validated survey was sent to 154 Southern Baptist clergy wives in the Phoenix and central Arizona region and 21 women responded to the survey. The survey measured the extent and type of their involvement in pastoral care and counseling behaviors, while assessing their level of confidence and training needs in this area. The investigation concurrently explored factors that contributed to their level of participation in these pastoral tasks.
