This exploratory research found a correlation between the traumatic stress and secondary traumatic stress an emergency responder experiences and the lessening of that stress due to the model of pastoral care that is offered to the emergency responder, specifically police but not limited to them.

In congregational ministry, one model of pastoral care involves the minister or priest to be present to those in crisis or in the midst of personal tragedy such as a sudden death. This element of a pastoral care model was also of significant importance to those interviewed for this project.

Any pastoral care model used in major trauma events with first responders must be adaptive to move through the cycle of "incident-investigation-conclusion", a movement not always necessary in a parish model of offering comfort through prayer and ritual. This element of flexibility allowing fluidity in the model is crucial in times of trauma.

It is not necessarily the theological and ontological questions asked which re-formulates the model of pastoral care, but the theological issues and the nature and timeline of the work as well as the culture of emergency responders which will direct the model. This difference also affects the model of pastoral care used with those suffering from secondary stress or compassion fatigue, as compared to models learned in theological training to use in helping primary victims of personal crisis or tragedy.

A brief study into the theological language and imagery used by police when speaking of God in times of crisis, will assist in giving direction as to helpful means of communication when involved in pastoral care to emergency responders in major traumatic events. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
