This study examined the effectiveness of Flow-Specific Guided Imagery (FSGI) and relaxation as a facilitator of the flow state in athletes. Flow-Specific Guided Imagery (FSGI) is proposed as being a cognitive-behavioral intervention that creates the optimal neural, mind-body connection resulting in Optimal Affective Altered States of Consciousness (OAASC). A pretest - posttest controlled research design was used to quantitatively assess the outcome. Forty-nine (n = 49) male and female community college athletes between the ages of 18--21 participated. They were stratified according to previous or no experience with imagery. Next, they were randomly assigned by computer to either the experimental (imagery) (n = 27) or control (no imagery) (n = 22) group. Baseball, volleyball, and basketball were the sports used. The mean number of times the experimental participants listened to the Flow-Specific Guided Imagery (FSGI) CD ranged from 2.4 to5.3 times. Results indicate that the use of Flow-Specific Guided Imagery (FSGI) is effective in the facilitation of the total flow state ( p = .038). It was not effective in the nine subscales. Relationships were examined between Dispositional Flow Scale (DFS-2) scores and Flow State (FSS-2) scores. The strength and direction of relationships varied among total and subscale scores. Previous research is validated between the disposition of an athlete and their respective flow state.
