Thesis (M.A.)--San Jose State University, 2006.
Silicon Valley, high-tech companies that make it onto Fortune magazine's list of "100 Best Companies to Work For" can serve as prototypical cases of organizations that encourage employee voice (e.g., expressed concerns or complaints). An interpretive analysis of in-depth interviews with managers responsible for designing and implementing employee voice programs and forums yielded a comprehensive inventory of these programs and forums and of management's rationales for sanctioning them. An interpretation of the interview data suggests that management at these employee-friendly companies greatly encourage employee voice by responding to employee questions and concerns, and by fostering a culture where voice can thrive. Additionally, while management believes it benefits from employee voice, they are constrained by the "bottom line." Management finds itself balancing the needs of the employees with the needs of the business and other stakeholders. Best practices are also provided for communication professionals wishing to implement employee voice programs.Subjects--Topical Terms:
